Twitter Users Respond to Roseanne Barr’s Firing

As Roseanne Barr unleashed a tweetstorm that included a racist post against Valerie Jarrett, who was a senior adviser to President Obama, Twitter was filled with impassioned responses, many coming from high-profile users. The conversation only grew louder once ABC announced it had fired Ms. Barr and canceled the next season of her sitcom, “Roseanne.” While some defended her, many condemned her words and applauded ABC for its decision.

When Ms. Barr likened Ms. Jarrett, who is black, to the offspring of “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes,” several cast members of “Roseanne” distanced themselves from the statement and pledged to no longer work on the show.

Former colleagues, including Tom Arnold — who worked on the original “Roseanne” and was married to her for four years — and the producer Danny Zuker responded with disdain.

Once Ms. Barr was fired, however, some well-known conservative performers defended her and claimed that conservative voices were being silenced.

On the other side, creators like Ava DuVernay and Shonda Rhimes applauded the swift efforts of Channing Dungey, who is ABC’s entertainment president and the first black entertainment president of a major broadcast television network.

Many more applauded ABC’s decision, including other performers and creators on ABC’s payroll, as well as Bob Iger, the president of the Walt Disney Company.

The phrase “Can ABC” started trending on Twitter, with users making jokes and asking for their favorite shows to replace “Roseanne.”
