Suspect dead, officer injured in gunfight near LA

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. – Authorities say a gunfight between police and a pair of suspects in a Los Angeles suburb left one suspect dead and an officer and two bystanders injured.

Monterey Park police dispatcher Jim Blankenship says an officer from his department was shot Sunday afternoon about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

Police Capt. Eugene Harris tells the Los Angeles Times that officers responding to reports of a crash and stabbing were fired on when they arrived at the scene. Harris says they shot and fatally wounded a suspect, and are still seeking a second.

Sheriff's Deputy Benjamin Grubb says the officer is expected to survive.

Harris says two bystanders were injured but it is not clear whether they were hurt in the initial incident or the shootout.
