SALES UP: Retail sales rose a modest 0.1 percent in June, according to the Commerce Department. That follows a 0.1 percent drop in May, which was the first decline after 10 straight monthly gains.

AUTOS, SHOPPING REBOUND: A rebound from spring supply disruptions stemming from the Japan natural disasters helped push auto sales up 0.8 percent. Sales at general merchandise stores, including Wal-Mart and Target, rose 0.4 percent.

FALLING GAS PRICES: Lower gas prices pulled station sales down 1.3 percent. That reduced overall retail sales. Still, consumers are paying nearly a dollar more per gallon than they did a year ago.
