A private school teacher in Florida has reportedly been suspended after allegedly calling an African-American student a "Haitian" in class.
The unidentified boy at the Lincoln Marti School in Homestead told CBS Miami he was "embarrassed" following the incident, which is now under investigation by school officials.
"I was feeling terrible about what happened during an argument with a classmate," the boy told the station. "My classmate called me Haitian. And I called him Haitian. The teacher came in and called me Haitian and told me to stand up."
School officials declined to identify the teacher, but said the individual has been suspended pending the results of an investigation.
"Lincoln Marti does not tolerate discrimination of any kind and the school takes this matter very seriously," the school's general counsel, Demetrio Perez, said in a statement. "The incident is under investigation."
The boy's mother, however, says she'll be looking for a new learning environment for her son.
"It's going to be hard, particularly since I’ll have to try to find another scholarship," she said. "But I just think my son will be better off somewhere else. He loves school and athletics and is an excellent student. And I know he will go far."
