A bomb squad was called to the McNamara Federal Building in downtown Detroit on Friday to inspect and later detonate an explosive device.

Upon further investigation, however, authorities learned that the suspicious device was discovered Feb. 26 -- three weeks earlier -- when an officer with the Federal Protective Service, which guards federal property across the country, found the explosive inside the building.

Instead of immediately contacting police, the officer stored the explosive in a locked room for three weeks, according to the station.

"This is so elementary. It's Bomb 101," former FBI agent Ned Timmons said in an interview with the station. "If, in fact, that's what happened -- that they took it inside for three weeks -- that's inexcusable."
