MONKTON, Md. – Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher and general manager Mike Flanagan was found dead at his northern Baltimore County property Wednesday, WBAL-TV reported, citing multiple sources.
The 59-year-old's body was reportedly found outside his house in Monkton in the late afternoon.
A Baltimore County police spokeswoman told The Baltimore Sun that officers received a 911 call at 4:26pm and later found a man's body on a trail leading to a barn.
Police have not officially confirmed the identity of the body or commented on the cause of death but sources also told the Sun that the deceased was Flanagan.
He won 167 games over his 18-year major league career. He also won the Cy Young Award in 1979, winning 23 games and helping the Orioles win the American League pennant.
"It's just shock right now," former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey told the Sun. "I know everybody that played with him loved him to death. He was the backbone of that pitching staff. He never quit -- this guy never quit. He was there for the duration. We had so many great games and so many great times, I just can't believe it."
