DEVELOPING: Campbell University officials urged students and faculty to stay indoors Wednesday due to a standoff on the campus between a student, deputies and a SWAT team, WRAL reports.
University spokesman Britt Davis said the incident began shortly before 2 p.m. when Harnett County deputies attempted to serve a warrant on student Jared Dale Knight, 24 who lives on a house on Dr. McCoy Road, which is on the north side of the campus, located in Blue Creek, N.C.
Knight then locked himself in the house. Davis said there is no indication that Knight is armed and that the campus lockdown is simply a precaution.
Davis said the university-owned house is surrounded and that the situation appears contained to that location.
According to military court records, Knight was dishonorably discharged from the Air Force in 2008 for taking more than $10,000 in military property and impersonating a wildlife officer in Texas, WRAL reports. Knight has also had a criminal record in civilian courts involving traffic offenses.
A police spokeswoman confirmed Knight is accused of stealing an AR-15 carbine from a gun store where he works.
Knight was arrested Tuesday and released on $3,000 bond. Police say the gun was recovered.
All evening classes at the university have been cancelled, NBC17 reports. Nearby Buies Creek Elementary school was also on lockdown in response, but it will release students at normal dismissal time.
