MARTINSVILLE, Ind. – The mother of a 6-year-old Indiana boy fatally shot by his 11-year-old brother is charged with neglect after prosecutors say she didn't protect her children from her son's violent tendencies.
Amanda Vandagrifft was being held Wednesday on $40,000 bond. Her boyfriend also was held on $7,500 bond on three neglect charges. A jail officer didn't know if either had an attorney.
Prosecutors say Vandagrifft's 11-year-old son shot his brother in the head with a .22 caliber rifle on June 30 while neither adult home. Court documents say the 11-year-old was trying to scare the younger boy into cleaning his room when he shot him.
A probable cause affidavit says the 11-year-old often threatened his siblings and allegedly held knives to their throats while babysitting to get them to do chores.
