SANTA ANA, Calif.-- The fugitive doctor at the heart of the University of California, Irvine, fertility scandal in the 1990s has been released from jail in Mexico City, where he was being held for extradition to the United States.
Dr. Ricardo Asch was arrested in Mexico on Nov. 3 on charges stemming from the fertility clinic scandal.
Asch and fertility doctor Jose Balmaceda are charged with stealing the eggs and embryos of dozens of women being treated at the UC Irvine Center for Reproductive Health. Balmaceda fled to his native Chile.
The Los Angeles Times says federal prosecutors in Orange County are surprised to learn of the recent release of Asch, whose whereabouts are unknown.
