LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles police have fired tear gas into a San Fernando Valley home and traded gunfire with a man who's believed to have shot and critically wounded an officer.
Lt. Andy Neiman says officers lobbed tear gas into the Sylmar home Monday in hopes of forcing out a man who's been barricaded inside for more than 12 hours. Neiman says the man fired several shots at SWAT officers and they shot back but it's unclear if they hit him.
The officers weren't hurt and the man is still inside.
The man is believed to have shot canine handler Steve Jenkins in the face. Jenkins, a 22-year-old veteran, is in critical but guarded condition.
Police were called to the home Sunday by a woman who said her husband had beaten her.
