The family of a Chicago woman killed in a car crash has filed a lawsuit claiming police removed her clothing and took pictures of her naked body.
Jessica Mejia, 20, died on Dec. 31, 2009, when the vehicle she was riding in, driven by her boyfriend, spun out of control and hit a pole before rolling into a ditch.
The lawsuit claims officers from the Cook County Sheriff's office stripped Mejia's body in plain view of onlookers and took several photos of her on the side of the road, none of which were required by protocol, MyFoxChicago reported.
Department spokesman Steve Patterson denied the allegations and said despite being in regular contact with the family since the crash, the department "never before heard of the bizarre scenario this lawsuit describes."
"There were multiple independent witnesses on the scene that night and crime scene photographs taken which would have prevented the scenario described from happening. We're sorry for the family's loss," he said in a statement.
Mejia's boyfriend is awaiting trial on charges of reckless homicide and driving under the influence in the crash.
The lawsuit seeks more than $200,000 for "severe and extreme distress."
