Frantic callers dial 911 after Mich. plane crash

MONROE, Mich. – A series of phone calls to emergency dispatchers in the moments after a plane crashed into a southern Michigan city park paint a picture of the frantic nature of the scene.

Recordings of 6 minutes' worth of calls were obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press through a Freedom of Information Act request. They reflect the shock of those who witnessed the fiery accident that killed all three on board.

One caller says simply that the plane was "gone." Another says "it doesn't look like they had a chance."

The single-engine Piper Malibu Mirage piloted by auto-parts business owner Rick Howell went down on March 29 in Monroe's Munson Park, in a grassy area surrounded by volleyball and tennis courts, a children's playground picnic area and soccer fields.
