ORLANDO, Fla. -- A 16-year-old student is being charged as an adult after deputies said she swung a hammer at an Orlando high school's assistant principal.
According to an arrest report, administrators also found dangerous weapons in Diana Barfield's backpack, including a steak knife, razor, box cutter, and an eight and a half inch homemade stabbing device, known as a "shank."
The incident happened Oct. 17 at Evans High School and started with Barfield fighting with another student. Reports say the assistant principal then tried to break it up when Barfield swung the hammer at him.
The teen's grandmother, Diane Cason, says Barfield was locked up in juvenile detention before for fighting. But she never knew her to carry weapons.
"The child is scared," Cason said. "I mean she's going to defend herself because that's Diana. She's not going to back down."
On Monday, Barfield was formally charged as an adult with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a school employee and possession of a weapon on school grounds. She was transferred from the juvenile detention facility to the Orange County jail.
Barfield's first appearance in front of a judge is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
