Detroit Police Officer Caught Playing Cop After Hours

Detroit police say one of their own was playing the role of a phony cop while off duty.

Detroit police say one of their own was taking his job a bit too far while off duty.

Officer James Markham is accused of using his personal vehicle as a patrol car to pull people over after hours.

Markham owned a Dodge Charger, the same kind of car police and deputies use throughout southeast Michigan, outfitted with police-style lighting and tinted windows.

He now faces a trio of charges that include knowingly possessing a license plate that came off another vehicle, illegally putting that plate on his vehicle, and conducting illegal traffic stops in his Detroit neighborhood and outside of the city.

Investigators say they are not sure of the officer’s motive, but if convicted he will have to do at least a year behind bars.
