Defendant to bring victim's family to sentencing

PORTLAND, Ore. – A suburban Portland man who pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in a bicyclist's death has agreed to pay for six members of the victim's family to travel from the East Coast to attend his sentencing.

Caleb Pruitt of Lake Oswego also pleaded guilty Thursday in Circuit Court to driving while intoxicated. He was taken into custody immediately and his $20,000 bail will be used to pay for airfare, rental cars and hotels so the family of Angela Burke can come to Portland. The Oregonian says he will be sentenced Aug. 26 to five years in prison.

The 26-year-old Burke was biking home from her job last December when a speeding car struck her, tossing her body nearly 100 feet.

The 28-year-old Pruitt told police he'd gone to dinner with his girlfriend and split a bottle of wine.
