A San Diego college canceled an invitation for former Mexican President Vicente Fox to speak on its campus after school officials grew concerned over his pro-drug legalization views, event organizers said.
According to Dean Nelson, a professor of journalism at Point Loma Nazarene University, all plans for the speaking engagement were set last fall. But then school officials unexpectedly pulled the plug on the event, SignOnSanDiego reports.
“While Fox’s stance on drug legalization did factor into our eventual decision to not host this event, it was not the sole deciding factor,” a school spokeswoman said in a statement.
Last August, Fox wrote on his blog that “we should consider legalizing the production, distribution and sale of drugs… We should look at it as a strategy to strike at and break the economic structure that allows gangs to generate huge profits in their trade.”
After hearing about the cancellation, the Trans-Border Institute at the University of San Diego has decided to let Fox speak there in April.
