The Shopping Basket // Studded Ankle Boots

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

This week, in the The Shopping Basket, is studded ankle boots.

The Mulberry booties were made for drooling over! The Killah boots are a great price point.

Gianmarco Lorenzi’s metal toe cap studded boots give the term ‘killer heels’ a whole new meaning. I like the refined cut of the Karen Millen pair.

The Shopping Basket // Statement Necklace

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Make a memorable statement in a standout necklace. It is an easy way to add some glam factor to an outfit. It looks just as good with your go to evening look as it does with a casual vest and pair of jeans.

The Cara Accessories necklace is great value and would look fabulous from day right through to night.

All eyes will be on you in any of these oversize neck pieces. Kenneth Jay Lane makes some jaw dropping designs.

Stand out in the Tasha multi strand necklace. No one will believe that it is only £44.

the shopping basket // the fashion cape

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

Capes are great because they conjure up a variety of images and references for different people. For some, capes are very prim and proper English governess. For others they bring to mind flying superheroes and high flung action. Whenever I see a cape, I’m taken down memory lane to a hooded red wool cape that was one part Red Riding Hood and one part historic military.

Whatever references they bring to your mind, they are a mainstay for autumn winter 2010. I like that they can be trans-seasonal. Dependent on fabric, they can work through from late summer through Winter.

You might have to clear the bank balance to score the Paul & Joe shearling cape but it’d be worth every penny as it is gorgeous. I like the sleek uncomplicated lines of Stella’s camel cape. Topshop take on the military trend with their navy cape with brass buttons. Derek Lam’s double collar cape screams luxury.

The Magenta 8 label as founded by Giovanna Velasquez in 2006, is a relatively new discovery for me. I love how chic this belted cape is. The fact that it is handmade, makes it all that more special. Capes need not be bulky and this is proven by the H! by Henry Holland at Debenhams light knit cape, the black tailored Belle Sauvage cape and the Miss Selfridge khaki cape.

Will you be donning a cape? What are your thoughts on them?.

the shopping basket // Mesh heels Cage heels Lace heels

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Designers want us to get our feet out of hiding and bare all in mesh heels, cage heels and lace heels.

It is the quickest way to get into a lighter summer look when paired with a pedicure. For all the features on the hottest summer 2010 nail varnish trends and shades in the Nail Polish Files segment here.

Mesh heels are so alluring. Katie Lombardo’s mesh heels and the Candela mesh shoes with stud embellishment really stand out to me.

Need a mood lift? Karen Millen get it right with the suede cage heels. It is available in black but it is the red pair that has my shoe closet weeping.
Yves Saint Laurent cage heels have been the object of affection of many and are now on sale. The nude Miss Selfridge cage pair fit in well with summers nudes, pastels and camel tones.

Both the Giuseppe Zanotti lace heels and Dolce & Gabbana lace open toe booties are enough to cause serious shoe envy. The Dorothy Perkins embellished lace ballet flats show flats need not be boring.

Will you be baring your feet in a Mesh, Cage or Lace heel?

the shopping basket // African Print

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

It is official, Africa is in Vogue.

This was boldly evident on the catwalks in a varied range of shows. With Van Noten Models featuring African prints in his Dries Van Noten spring summer 2010 show and models in the Jean Paul Gaultier autumn winter 2010 collection wearing African print turbans, it is clear that it is the fashion year of the African print.

I keep spotting colorful ‘Ankara’ prints from Nigeria, distinctive Dutch wax prints from Ghana, Kanga prints from Tanzania and other East African countries, Ikat, Batik, mudcloth and their contemporaries in a host of ethnic trend inspired collections.

The prints as inspired by cultural tribal African prints are bold, summery and inject a vibrant global ethnic mood to an outfit. Be it an African print dress or an African print jumpsuit that you may fancy, there is a bevvy available.

Here are some pieces to hopefully inspire you if you are looking to shop the tribal print trend or experiment with an African print.

Get into the tribal trend.

Snap up a stylish tote with a bold print like this one in the ASOS Africa collection. If I had my way, this Bantu Wax swimsuit would be in my swimwear drawer! It has such a vibrant print. Oasis playsuit is perfect for sunny days and the L.A.M.B bag had me at that colour.

Both the Dries Van Noten halter neck top and the Dolce Vita strapless jumpsuit ooze chic. I adore the colour of the Julia Smith MIA (Made in Africa) blazer. The Oasis skirt is bold and bright.

I like the smocked torso of the WeWe clothing dress. The cut of the Christie Brown dress is great for those looking for more structure. The House of Bilimoria playsuit is perfect for anyone who likes a great print but prefers to keep things neutral colour wise. At that price the Forever 21 skirt is a great bargain buy.

The Sika designs dress is pretty but it is the Sika designs Mac coat that gets my vote! Such a chic to try the ethnic trend. ASOS Africa collection currently has quite a few things on sale. The print of this dress caught my eye. A great way to get in on the trend is to wear an African print accessory, these flats in the Belle by Sigerson Morrison collection would do rather nicely.

The shopping basket // Swimwear 2010

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Tis the season to strip off into great swimwear and hit the pool or beach. Whether you prefer designer swimwear or a good high street piece, there is a suit for each girl.

This womens swimwear guide is broken down into category in a bid to inspire both your pool and holiday beachwear this summer.

Happy stylish swimming and lounging! Fabulous heels are optional.

Who says one piece bathing suits have to be boring? This summer, there is a plethora of prints, leg cuts and colours to chose from.
I am adoring the Bantu Wax print piece. The white swimsuit by Everything but the Water is just what bronzed skin is calling for! Keep an eye out for price slashes, I am always up for a good online swimwear sale. The maze Print Loeffler Randall zipper swimsuit is just one of the few reduced online.

Can’t decide between a one piece and a bikini? Go half way with a cut-out swimsuit. The Emilio Pucci neoprene suit is fuss free, razor sharp and slick.

Not afraid of colour? Go for a bold two piece in a flattering shade. Lisa Marie Fernandez’s yellow bikini balances a classic cut with bright hue. I like the cut of the white Melissa Odabash bikini. The hoop detail at the sides of the bikini bottoms add interesting detail.

A girl can never have too many prints… This summer there is an abundance of print choices. Florals have gone into hyper bloom with exotic floral and fauna in the forefront. Abso-freaking-lutely crazy about the Topshop set. Polynesian prints never looked so good.

What pieces will be in your swimwear drawer and holiday suitcase this Summer?

The shopping basket // clogs

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Where are you on the big clog debate? Love them or hate you cannot open a magazine or log unto five fashion blogs in a row without a mention of the debate starting footwear.

In The Shopping Basket today is clogs galore. I love the clean aesthetic of the crisp Chloé pair. They are perfect for the girl who wants to try the trend minus the usual clumpy factor associated with clogs.

Had your eye on Miu Miu’s swallow/floral print but don’t have enough pennies? The Jeffrey Campbell print pair would be a great alternative at a cheaper price point.

Which is your favourite pair?

So back to that debate.. are you clog crazy or are you con the clog?

the shopping basket // multiple stacking rings

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I always stack rings on like there is no tomorrow. I call it my finger-wear as seen here and here. I am like the ring love child of Mr. T of The A-team and Karl Lagerfeld. Most of my rings were picked up for little to nothing along the way (on travels,in thrift/charity/vintage shops and flea markets etc).

Even though I create my random stacks from my multiple varied rings, I would not say no to the above sets.

The top left Iosselliani set is beyond perfect. There is something about the mix and finish of the gold and silver metals employed that I find appealing.

The Urban Outfitters set definitely gets my best value buy. The six ring set for £12 is a pocket friendly way of stacking those rings high. The shape and metal tone of each ring in the set works.

the shopping basket // shorts

Top row – Topshop shorts, South shorts and Helmut Lang shorts. Second row – Oasis shorts, Topshop shorts and Bottega Veneta shorts. Third row – Clothing at Tesco Florence & Fred shorts, Acne shorts and Marc by Marc Jacobs shorts.

Tis the season to drag those shorts out of the back of your closet and your legs out of hiding. Tailored shorts are so chic for both the day and night. The trick is to look for detail, a great cut and good stitching.

Top row – Matthew Williamson shorts and Miss Selfridges shorts. Second row – Topshop shorts and Moschino shorts. Third row – Dries Van Noten shorts and Mönstrade shorts.
Feeling frivolous or feminine? Snag a pair of delicated print shorts. The Rabbit Moschino shorts are adorable. The Topshop butterfly print shorts are great without being too bold.

Top row – 3.1 Phillip Lim shorts and Ashish shorts. Second row – Debenhams shorts and All Saints shorts. Third row – Baum und Pfergarten shorts and Thakoon shorts.
Add some shine to your summer wardrobe with a decadent pair of sequin shorts. The wrapover 3.1 Phillip Lim shorts are drool inducing. I like the £19 Debenhams pair and would make like Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City season one in them. I would get them in one size too large for a slouchier fit.

Top row – Surface to Air shorts and 3.1 Phillip Lim shorts. Second row – Alexander Wang shorts and Debenhams shorts. Third row – Oasis shorts and Helmut Lang shorts.

I know it is currently smouldering and leather and heat do not mix. Yet it is super chic for cooler summer days. Sixty pounds for those Oasis leather shorts is terrific.

What shorts will you shimmy into this summer?

meadham kirchhoff for topshop

Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff are the design duo behind the high fashion womenswear label, Meadham Kirchhoff. The have an intrinsic ability to evoke the elusive whimsical and the dark simultaneously. The woman they design for is individual and strong.

Meadham Kirchhoff have lent their hand to a spring summer 2010 collection for Topshop.

This marks their second collection for Topshop.

The lineup is in a restrained palette of black, navy and flesh, it was inspired by their assistant.

The press release states – “Influenced by their Assistant Erin, whose way of layering eclectic pieces of borrowed, vintage or found items, the collection tries to explore this idea of mixing together different items so that each piece looks great individually or mixed with other pieces from the collection.”

The collection (a cross section as featured in collage above) includes dresses, a long jumper, t-shirts, two tailored biker jackets( one in a wool and the other in a black denim) and slips that play with proportion and lightness. The designs

An going thread throughout the designs is spots of glitter, intricate sequin embellishment, over/underlays and dramatic cuts.

The deconstruction of the lace, tulle and sequin details on flesh and sheer garments add a darkness, dynamic and depth to pieces that could be erroneously misconstrued as basic.

Pleasantly the collection retains a feel of the signature Meadham Kirchhoff design ethos.

I am always enthused by garments that allow for layering. The lightness, interesting cuts and colour palette make for timeless garments timeless that infinite layering options

The collection launches at Topshop (both in UK and USA on 20th May, 2010.

What are your thoughts on the collection? Will you be queuing up to buy a piece?
