Trend Spotter // Far East

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Dries van Noten 2011 | Louis Vuitton spring summer 2011 | Paul Smith spring summer 2011 | Haider Ackerman spring summer 2011

For spring summer designers went by way of the Far East. Subtle inspiration in the form of obi belts and kimono style cuts was seen at Hermes and Chanel.

Over at Paul Smith and Dries van Noten, the prints were influenced by all things Far East. On the mirrored Louis Vuitton runway, the Chinese dres, Mandarin collared jacket and silk pants was flamboyantly reinterpreted by Marc Jacobs.

That same season, the trend also made a surpising appearance at Haider Ackermann who is known for his dark aesthetic.

Trend Spotter // Fringing

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Anna Sui spring summer 2011 | Pringle of Scotland spring summer 2011 | Giles spring summer 2011 | Mark Fast spring summer 2011 | Versace spring summer 2011 | Gucci spring summer 2011

Once the mainstay of the bohemian, fringing took center stage on spring summer 2011 in a variety of guises. At Versace, it was Greek inspired meets signature high voltage Versace. At Mark Fast it was exuberant and exotic whilst at Pringle of Scotland it was tailored pragmatism.

Who knew fringing was so versatile?

Trend Spotter // Utilitarian Minimalism

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Rag & Bone, V.P.L, Alexander Wang, Richard Chai Love.

This trend is nineties in the manner of minimalist Helmut Lang and Calvin Klein meets those utility trousers that were all the range in that decade.

I spotted the utilitarian minimalist trend all over spring summer 2011 catwalks. Its characteristics are simple; a neutral palette, minimalist lines, military and utilitarian features.

Designers paired a minimalist aesthetic with neutral monochromatic tones such as white, khaki, black, ecru, sand and olive etc. Utilitarian features include combat patch pockets, military and flight straps etc.

Both festival meets bohemian meets hippie macrame and crochet are key elements of the 1970′s trend.

Trend Spotter // Pleats

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Hannah Marshall, Haider Ackermann, Osman, Vera Wang, House of Holland, Richard Nicoll, House of Holland, Lanvin and Chloé.

Box, knife, accordion, flat, wrinkled; if it was a pleat, it was on the spring summer 2010 catwalks. Designers reinterpreted this classic fabric fold in a variety of creative ways. At Hannah Marshall, it was structural and statement making. It was languid and fluid at Chloé, with floaty chiffon. Over at Osman Yousefzada it was pared back minimalism in neon tones. It is without a doubt that pleats are on the horizon for spring.

What is your favourite pleat piece in your closet?

Trend Spotter // Long Skirts Spring Summer 2011 Trend

Monday, December 6th, 2010

Designers enjoy playing with us. One minute the hot skirt length is short, then it gives way to the awkward midi length hem.

Put your leg shaving sticks and depilatories as according to the spring summer 2010 forecast, long is in. Floaty or body-con and tight? It does seem to matter.

Trend Spotter // Gold

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

King Midas lent his golden touch to autumn winter 2010-2011 collections. Gone was summers camel tones and in its place was a shiny river of opulent gold.

It is certainly not a new look, what with metallics being a regular autumn winter trend. What it is relevant though, is the innovations designers have used in employing it (through advances fabric technology and embellishment techniques) in inspiring new ways.

Catwalks shimmered with rich gold brocade (heavily featured in Alexander McQueen’s line-up, second image to right) and reflective gold lame.

It was lashings of 80′s matte gold patent leather (seen at PPQ, with the belted coat on the extreme left) and molten black backed gold (as seen in second from left image at Dries van Noten).

Also on the catwalks was gold lace, gold lurex (spotted at Gianfranco Ferré, extreme right photo), gold knits, gold leaf transfers and other gold fabrics and embellishments.

Will you be wearing gold this season? What are your thoughts on it?

Trend Spotter // Neon Trend Spring Summer 2011

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

At shows like Adam Entwiste, Osman Yousefzada neon made an appearance in the form of colour blocked flashes set againt somber tones (such as khaki, white, navy etc). Over at Christopher Kane, the catwalk was awash in a spectrum of eye blinding, neon lace. Even pop star turned fashion designer, Victoria Beckham got in on the bright hued colour brigade with bright purple and canary yellow shades. Mark Fast’s tasseled knit designs made like creatures of paradise in colour tones fit for an exotic bird.

There is no escaping it, neon and highlighter bright shades are everywhere next summer.

Trend Spotter // White Spring Summer 2011 Trend

Monday, October 4th, 2010

White is the spring summer 2011 mascot colour (actually a non colour for any sticklers out there) and it ordered a full white out on catwalks.

Everyone seemed to show a number of white garments. Whatever their view point or aesthetic, if you looked hard enough, white was there to be found. From the priest of the off duty look, Alexander Wang that is, to the king of the tailored sultry, Antonio Berardi etc.

So what does this mean for us mere mortals? You have the autumn winter season to start saving your pennies. No, not for new garments, but for all the dry cleaning bills you will inevitably rack up from wearing so much white.
