Friday, November 12th, 2010

1. Nicholas Kirkwood Faded Suede Elastic Open Toe Boots | £613.18
Kirkwood continues to delight with his footwear. This booties are one part Victorian (the lace and buttoned ankle cuff) and one part architectural futurism (heel and incline).

2. Votivo For VOGUE Candle | £35
British VOGUE Editor has collaborated with candle brand, Votivo in the creation of a bespoke candle for VOGUE. According to VOGUE.COM, the candle smells of Votivo’s latest fragrance, Smoke on the Water. It apparently smells of a smoky mix of damp summer leaves, cedar and sweet caramel musk. The VOGUE candle will be part of Votivo’s Aromatic Collection range. Five pounds from the sale of each candle will go to Royal Marsden Cancer
Charity (RMCC).

3. Vivienne Westwood Yellow Tartan Diary | £35
Westwood has launched a collection of stationary that includes A4 sized silk and print covered notebooks and an A5 2011 diary. The notebooks are £25 and come in either a the iconic Squiggle (in red and grey colours) or the vintage Anglomania Union Jack flag. Here is to hoping I find the tartan 2011 diary in my stocking.

4. Husam El Odeh For Acne Spring Summer 2010 |
One of my favourite jewellery designers is Husam El Odeh. He is genius in his ability to reinterpret seemingly mundane and simple materials into thought provoking jewellery. I am obsessed with his spring summer 2011 jewellery collaboration with Acne. The above ear piece has got to be the most memorable piece of jewellery I have seen in lately. How incredible that the ear piece is worn hanging over the ear via the narrow metal part of the cuff?

5. Yves Saint Laurent Burgundy Cape | £2,555
This cape would make for an impeccable cover up from the cold. The military style of the shoulder epaulettes, gold buttons and flap patch pockets makes it timeless. The tailoring is flawless.

6. Dashing Diva (Design Nails on the Go) Metallic Nails: Gold Digger | $8
Metallic foil nails by Minx have been all the rage made even popular by celebrities like Rihanna, Beyonce, Katy Perry etc. It is music to my ears that you can get the look with these press and go nails by Dashing Diva. I wish they were sold over here in the UK. Great for giving nails that molten gold makeover.

Down the Rabbit Hole

Natalia Vodianova as Alice in Wonderland and Tom Ford as White Rabbit. Photo by Annie Leibovitz. From Vogue ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ Editorial.

As a child I wanted to be Alice. After all she got to wear a pretty blue frock and had the most rad adventure.

I love the Alice in Wonderland book by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (his pseudonym was Lewis Carrol) so much. I have read it a zillion times and cannot get enough of it. Each character is amazing.

It thus made total sense when I heard that Tim Burton(famous for his quirky, surreal and dark movies such Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, Corpse Bride etc) was getting his dream team(actor Johnny Depp, actress Helena Bonham Carter and Danny Elfman who usually does the score of his movies)together for an Alice in Wonderland movie.

Johnny Depp will be playing The Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter will take on the role of Queen of Hearts/Red Queen and Mia Wasikowska will play Alice. British Actor Matt Lucas of UK TV series Little Britain has been cast as both Tweedledum and Tweedledee. Oh teeny tid bit, Burton’s movie will see a nineteen year Alice make a return to the wonderful world of her surreal childhood adventure.

The movie is set for UK release on March 5th. To say that I’m excited is a mega understatement. I am counting the days till I see the Disney movie as I know it will be brilliant.

In the mean time, I have been busying myself with Alice in Wonderland related products. There are quite a few, everything from bespoke garment designs by fashion designers, accessories and beauty products. Some of my favourites are featured as below.

Urban Decay, yummy trend setting make up company, says “Urban Decay takes you down the Rabbit hole with its limited edition Disney Alice in Wonderland inspired Book of Shadows.”

I could stare at that eye palette forever. It looks wonderfully enchanting! The set includes 16 best selling eye-shadows, 2 eye pencils and an eye-shadow primer.

The names of the eye-shadows are fantastic; my favourite has to be gold ‘Midnight Tea Party’. Alice would be so proud.

The Book of Shadows is available at Urban Decay and varying stockists.

The fabulous people at nail polish favourite OPI have lovingly custom blended four nail colours. There is a magnificent blue which is aptly called ‘Absolutely Alice’, a yummy red inspired by the Queen of Hearts entitled ‘Off with her red’, a delish glittery shade obviously inspired by The Mad Hatter called ‘ Mad as a Hatter’ and a pink ‘Thanks so Muchness’. I like to think that Alice would give the nod of approval to these.

They are available at OPI

Printemps, the delish Parisian store has asked varying designers (including Christopher Kane, Margiela etc) to create a custom piece for lucky Alice.

Nicholas Kirkwood, known for his epic shoes, (designed those sick nuts and d bolts shoes for Rodarte) came up with the above shoes for Printemps. The design is delightfully fantastical! They are all about escapism, which the beloved Alice in Wonderland story is all about.

Apparently the shoes are inspired by the White Rabbit. I adore his sketch in image one. The design as shown in second image shows that the shoes are bedecked with teacups, a pocket watch, a large key etc. Alice would most definitely approve, don’t you think?

To see those dreamy shoes and all the other designs commisioned by Printemps, visit their Boulevard Haussman store. The pieces are on display there from 1st February to 13th March.
