Meet Andrew Yang. Yang is an artist (writer, model, illustrator, photographer etc) through and through, he is an ex design employee for Dennis Basso.

Lucky for us, he also factors in the time to make bespoke rag dolls.

Oh, and if by rag doll you think I mean, the raggedy Ann dolls some of us had as kids, think again.

Andrew Yang creates anything but. He rather conjures up the most beautifully detailed but slightly creepy fashion rag dolls that will haunt your mind.

He makes his dolls from muslin, couture fabrics and incredibly life like hair. The garments his creations wear are beautiful enough to make me weep from envy. He calls his dolls ‘Kouklitas’ (the name originates for the Greek word ‘Koukla’ which means doll) and has created everything from one eye, Siamese to mermaid dolls.

Andrew recently was commissioned by The BLOCK magazine to recreate looks from Spring/Summer 2010 catwalks. His collection for The BLOCK has dolls wearing instantly recognisable spring/summer 2010 looks such as designs by Gareth Pugh, Lanvin, Proenza Schouler and Givenchy etc.

What- The BLOCK magazine Issue 20 Launch Party + Presentation of The BLOCK magazine custom rag doll collection by Andrew Yang inspired by spring/summer 2010 Ready to wear.

When - Monday 15th Feb 2010.

Where - Envoy Enterprises Gallery, New York.

The Crowd - Art & Fashion lovers

What happened - Despite the heavy snow, over a 400 strong crowd showed up at the Envoy in New York for The BLOCK’s 20th issue launch and a presentation of their custom rag doll collaboration with Andrew Yang.

Andrew(seen in image two), who designs the incredible Kouklitas range of rag dolls, had been commissioned by The BLOCK magazine, to recreate well known spring/summer ready to wear catwalk looks, on his 27 inch rag dolls. An editorial spread featuring the custom dolls is in the new issue.

For Andrew the launch party day began with an interview with Fashion TV Brazil, then 6 hours spent on installing the wonderfully detailed dolls(which are bedecked in recreated looks by likes of Lanvin,Givenchy,Proenza etc as handmade by Yang) in the Envoy space before the doors opened at 8pm.

‘Pethidine’, a short film from installation artist Ryan Kennedy also aired from a projection screen in the corner of the space. The event which happened over the course of New York Fashion Week was a hit, with many saying it was the best event they and attended that fashion week.

Yang’s handmade dolls are available from his Kouklitas site from $600.

More Info - Check out The BLOCK here.

Andrew Yang, an artist and former Dennis Basso design employee has had me drooling with his darkly surreal (everything from cyclops to siamese twins) handmade doll collection for some time now. The somewhat creepy Kouklitas doll collection is wonderfully detailed. My favourite is his two headed doll, ‘Cora and Clarice’.

Yang was recently commissioned by The Block magazine , to re-create our favourite looks from Spring/Summer 2010 catwalks.

Looks including those by Rick Owens, Ann Demeulemeester, Givenchy, Comme Des Garçons etc are modelled by 24 inch rag dolls. How sick is the Gareth Pugh? Check out the epic long braid!

The above images are part of an editorial by Dan Forbes. Look out for the upcoming issue of The Block for the full editorial.
The issue will be available to buy from Opening Ceremony .

The Proenza Schouler and Comme Des Garçons wearing dolls have refuelled my candy coloured hair filled daydreams.

The dolls ranging from about $600 will be available from Yang’s Kouklitas site.

Yang’s supermodel rag dolls kick Barbie’s golden looks to the curb. The dilemma will be choosing which one to buy.
