Inspiration // Madhubala

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Images via here and here.

I am continually held enthralled by the beauty of Bollywood screen siren, Madhubala (real name – Begum Mumtaz Jehan Dehlavi).

She possessed something far greater than the skin deep. It is that all encompassing charisma that all true stars embody.

She encapsulated that stuff that legends of erstwhile were made of. Her very body language was pure magic, pure golden cinematography.

Fame came to her when she was 16, at 24 she was diagnosed with hole in the heart, at 36 she passed away.

The most beautiful shine brightly, sometimes gone far too soon but in their wake they leave gold stardust to aspire to.

Be inspired.

Inspiration // Chanel Pre Fall 2012

Tuesday, December 27th, 2011

Images – Style.com

This meeting place of opulent Bombay and a brand of chic that can only be French, (by way of Chanel) made for interesting contrast.

I like how the regal presence of headpieces and jewelry as inspired by a Raj period India, give new voice to the traditional Chanel tweed and pearl.

Something old is made seemingly new by the unexpected marriage of polar opposites.

The dark kohl rimmed eyes set against Karl Lagerfeld’s vision of a neutral pre fall 2012 Chanel is refreshing.

Inspiration // Willie Christie Grace Coddington

It is impossible to talk about fashion photography in the 1970′s and early 1980′s without Willie Christie cropping up.

The acclaimed British fashion photographer is known for his extensive work with British Vogue. His work become synonymous with iconic rock and roll album cover art, glamorous slick images of the most glamorous people, captivating dark sepia photography.

For me it is his ability to capture an intriguing-beguile-mysterious quality that is almost tangible in form that fascinates.

I am particularly fond of Christie’s shots of a young Grace Coddington (the former model was his wife at that time and is now US Vogue’s Creative Director). There is a magic about these images of Grace by Christie that holds court.

These images and others (rare images of Grace Coddington, unseen images from the worlds of fashion and music across the 70′s and 80′s and a celebrated 1969 Rolling Stones shoot portrait of Mick Jagger) are currently part of Christie’s Limited Edition Collection. It is on display at the Century Club, 61-63 Shaftesbury Avenue, London.

Inspiration // Helmut Lang Oona Wristlet Bag

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Oona oil slicked suede wristlet bag by Helmut Lang in orchid)

I was sent this pod-like, oiled suede wristlet bag. I like design that takes me down memory lane. First stop was the 90′s; the modernist mood of the time and the style of the likes of Carolyn Bessette .

Where would 90′s minimalism be without Helmut Lang? I look at the work of designers like Rick Owens, Alexander Wang etc. and there is a thread of design thought akin to Lang’s 90′s aesthetic. His was the knack for a modernist approach constructed with razor sharp tailoring and a touch of the urban utility.

After he retired from fashion in 2005, the Helmut Lang brand was relaunched with Michael and Nicole Colovos at helm of creative direction.

Second stop on that memory lane was tasting the cocoa bean from the pod for the first time. I recall being as fascinated with with shape of the pod as I was with the texture and taste of the bean.

Third stop is a pair of orchid hued oiled suede heels that my Mother wore in my teens. They were the love child of Calvin Klein and Jil Sander in form but unabashedly rich in the exact hue of the bag.

I look forward to wearing this gifted design. It will be like carrying those memories on my wrist.

Inspiration // Alexander McQueen Spring 2012

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Video courtesy of Style.com via YouTube.

Brilliance is synonymous with Sarah Burton’s spring 2012 collection for Alexander McQueen. Her strength, lies in her ability to make the other worldly, achingly beautiful. That which is savage, menacing or non human, becomes strangely compelling.

The only limitations when it comes to creativity, lie in our minds. There can be no fear where the creative abound.

Inspiration // Acne x Daniel Silver

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Acne x Daniel Silver

I am being inspired by the capsule collaboration between London based artist, Daniel Silver and Acne.

The clever montage of West African Dutch wax cotton prints and animal print is refreshing. It is given further depth, with motorcycle jackets that have a play on hue in an ombre fashion. Other designs that stand out include a bright two tone crop knit and high-neck button-down shirts.

This collaboration shows that unrelated elements (in this case – the ethnic, primal and pared back structure) can cohere.

Launched on 11th October, it is exclusive to the Dover Street Acne Flagship store.

Inspiration // Maria Francesca Pepe Spring Summer 2012 Veleno

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

There is a distinct identity to the Maria Francesca Pepe brand, herself. I get a sense each season that each piece she creates is Maria through and through. Her avant-garde jewellery-wear is synonymous with dark romance, allure, the intrinsic, mystery and the emotive.

For her spring summer 2012 collection, entitled Veleno, she explores notions and the symbolism of the snake. Veleno, which means a poison that penetrates and changes the nature of something, sees Pepe lend her unique perspective this inspiration.

The strength of this handmade (crafted by artisans in Italy) collection, lies in the fact that Pepe is able to birth something new out of a reference point (that is easily referenced in a literal fashion) as old as the hills.

Veleno is an organic collection that sees Pepe employ her usual mix of metal with a strong turquoise presence. There are graphic angular oversize earrings, her signature tubular is reborn with spellbinding cascading gold chains and turquoise, upper arm cuffs, shoulder necklaces, amulets, turquoise bedecked charm rings, intricately woven body chains adorned with crosses, choker bibs, spiked necklaces and headdresses etc.

Each season sees her carry forward signatures such as her charm rings, the tubular necklaces and bracelets, her use of the cross. The oversize letter safety pins from fall 2011-2012 Fortuna collection are present and conform to the mood of the new season.

The snake, as a symbol, is known for its ties to ancient Egypt and the hedonistic glamor of the seventies. Although there is a dark elegant glamor to Pepe’s work and a feel of Egypt, there is nothing ancient, seventies or set to a specific time frame about this lineup.

Maria’s ingenuity is that Veleno is at once of the moment and timeless.

It simultaneously emotes of the present, while encapsulating the past and future perfect.

Inspiration // Cynthia Germain

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Every blue fashion moon or so, I meet someone who I can’t get off my mind. Parsons graduate, Cynthia Germain is one such person.
The designer (seen on my right in the second image) creates hand made luxury leather pieces that are just incredible; holsters, belts embellished with cowries, wrap watches on luxe leather, innate pieces of jewelry fusing the luxury with the ethnic.

Apart from the fact that each piece is incredibly unique (Germain lovingly makes each by hand), there is mood that is at once both minimalist but detailed about each design she crafts.

I’ve never seen a holster (also known as a bum-bag or fanny pack) that I ever desired, till I stumbled on the one above by Germain. Everything from the shape, construction and the little details work cohesively.

Germain who is of Haitian descent has cited a trip to Niger as inspiration for her work.

Today I am inspired by the mood her work evokes.

Inspiration // Katie Rowland Siren Earpieces

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Katie Rowland takes my breath away with these platinum, diamond encrusted earpieces. Known for striking pieces that fuse her graphic design background with the lustrous. The award winning (Coutts New Designer Award 2009, the Sonama-Cutrer Design Award 2009 and the Lonmin Design Innovation Award for Platinum 2009 & 2010) jewelery designer inspires with her Siren design.

The Siren earpieces are at once both organic and conceptual. Not an easy balance to achieve.

Inspiration // Azzedine Alaïa Spring Summer 2003 Couture

Thursday, July 21st, 2011

“Fashion is dead. Designers nowadays do not create anything, they only make clothes so people and the press would talk about them. The real money for designers lie within perfumes and handbags. It is all about image. Alaïa remains the king. He is smart enough to not only care about having people talk about him. He only holds fashion shows when he has something to show, on his own time frame. Even when Prada owned him he remained free and did what he wanted to do.” – Catherine Lardeur. (former editor in chief of French Marie Claire)

Larduer’s quote has never left me.

His understanding of the body is overwhelmingly accurate. Thus resulting in garments that are significant for more than just being ‘body conscious’. His work and aesthetic is a dedication to the human form. With each design seemingly made to sculpt the body as it were.

Alaïa’s garments are luxury through and through, without the usual branding that this can accompany.

The above images are from his spring summer 2003 couture collection. The beauty and detail of it still leaves me floored.

A great collection only gets better with time.
