Marian Kihogo x Grey Chalayan By Hussein Chalayan By Phill Taylor

No one has quite fused technology and high fashion together like Hussein Chalayan.

I’ve followed his work since the mid 90′s when I was in secondary school. I remember being transfixed by the jacket Björk wore on the cover of her Post album. Crafted by Hussein Chalayan from envelope paper, I could not get it off my mind. Chalayan a recent graduate (his The Tangent Flows graduate collection had involved garments he’d buried then unburied in his garden) had me excited about fashion design.

The multi award winning designer has taken fashion to unmatched frontiers, winning accolades and awards such as British Fashion Designer of the Year twice.

Seventeen years later and his work; Black Line (his catwalk collection) and new younger capsule line, Grey Line still inspire, challenge and thought provoke.

Given this background, it was thus truly then an indescribable honor to be asked to interpret the Grey Line by Chalayan. This was in conjunction with a launch party over London Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2012-2013 for the Grey Line and Chalayan e-store.

I teamed up with photographer Phill Taylor who shot the above portraits of me in my styled head to toe Grey Line looks (minus accessories).

As a nod to Hussein Chalayan’s genius use of technology, Phill came up with the idea to then overlay the finished portrait imagery with code from my blog and the Chalayan site.

At the launch party, interpreted images by collaborators were displayed as seen here.

The portraits of me by Phill are subject of this post on the Hussein Chalayan blog.

See the newly launched e-store and new Airborne fragrance.

More on Phill Taylor’s photography here and here.

Many kind thanks to Hussein Chalayan, Phill and Elizabeth and Davinaa at Hussein Chalayan.

St Martins Lane & Marian Kihogo Mariankihogo.com 2nd Anniversary Dinner // Asia De Cuba

I have always been of the belief that if you are going to do something, you have to do it well. I do not believe in half measures as there is unparalleled greatness in us all. That greatness is done a disservice when we settle for the ‘just good enough’.

When the chance came to mark the second anniversary of this site, it was imperative to do it justice.

The anniversary event was more than just about a digital space, for me it was a celebration of the inspiration I have been blessed to come upon, since the inception of Mariankihogo.com.

It was a sincere honor to have St Martins Lane as headline sponsor. The hotel is a favorite of mine. Her Cocteau-esque like interior and level of service keeps the venue joyful. I think the best things bring us further joy when shared. This the reason why I chose St Martins Lane as host for the 2nd anniversary celebration of this site. The sharing of the joy the venue gives me with guests, brought me further joy.

The anticipated night arrived, laden with glamor. I wore a dreamy scarlet red autumn winter 2011-2012 cocktail gown by Ana Šekularac, a turban embellished with a gold tone brooch, Anita Quansah bespoke necklace, Nicholas Kirkwood for Peter Pilotto spring summer 2011 and a vintage faux fur.

Bespoke virgin fruit cocktails crafted specially for the event were had in St Martins Lane Light Bar. My wonderful and supportive guests from the creative worlds of fashion, music, art, photography etc made the night truly special and were as beautiful as our surroundings.

Guest of honor actress, muse to Vivienne Westwood, model and DJ Tolula Adeyemi’s was resplendent in a breathtaking Ana Šekularac cocktail dress, Christian Louboutin heels and Rachel Galley jewellery. Arriving to a flurry of cameras with the gracious musician Natt Weller. Weller was immaculately dressed in an all black ensemble. His coat was by his father, specifically from Paul Weller’s capsule collection for Oasis front man Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green clothing line.

After the bespoke cocktails in a private section of the Light Bar we were ushered into the welcoming colonnaded space (which is as conceptual in vision as the menu) that is Asia de Cuba.

The three course dinner saw us dine on the restaurant’s marriage of Asian cuisine and technique infused with the tropical flavours of the Caribbean, to homestyle Cuban cooking using Asian ingredients.

Over the two years that I have written this site I have fallen in love with certain products, brands and services. It was a pleasure to share this with guests in what I affectionately call the glam bag. My mission with the bags was to give guests an experience of the loves of Mariankihogo.com away from Mariankihogo.com. It was generously filled with friends (thank you to each one of you!) of the site; Daisy by Marc Jacobs, Mulberry, Bodhi (generously put together a bespoke two piece gift set; the bath therapy and a moisturizer), Weleda, Mavala of Switzerland, Violent Lips, Biscuiteers (who made a bespoke biscuit as inspired by the Mariankihogo.com logo), Diego Dalla Palma, Orla Kiely, Revlon and Jainnisa etc.

The mouthwatering courses, the impeccable service, atmosphere amongst guests, conversation, the gift bag and guest of honor Tolula’s gracious toast made for an unforgettable dinner and night.

The purpose of this site (I wrote a piece on this for ARISE Magazine ) has always been to provoke thought and stimulate conversation. As I sat back and took in the atmosphere at the Asia de Cuba dinner table it brought great warmth to know the site had achieved that mission.

I would like to extend infinite thanks to the management of St Martins Lane for being headline sponsor of this celebration. I must also thank the staff at the Light Bar and Asia de Cuba for exceptional service.

St Martins Lane & Marian Kihogo Mariankihogo.com 2nd Anniversary Dinner // Light Bar

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

In lead up to the three course 2nd anniversary celebratory meal in Asia de Cuba at St Martins Lane, was a drinks prelude in the atmospheric confines of the Light Bar.

Being a non drinker myself, St Martins Lane generously created a decadent drinks menu including non alcoholic cocktails.

These bespoke concoctions (notably served by very attentive staff) meant my guests and I could arrive, unwind and connect in conversation before being ushered on into dinner.

Arrival

Wednesday, December 7th, 2011

Photo by Les Garcons De Glasgow.

Alexander McQueen dress | assorted jewellery | vintage bag | turban

Birthdays, moments and that perfect dress or lip color all have one thing in common, an arrival.

Be that joyfully anticipated (my 30th birthday on day of photo) or unexpected (the unplanned but in the moment photo), they will undoubtedly arrive. When they do, they shall find us waiting, languid in our arrival.

Old dates in my style diary.

Dolce & Gabbana Dress Me Up London

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

The above was what I scrawled on my Dolce & Gabbana window. Given that it is true, it is no wonder that I am still on a Dolce & Gabbana high nearly a week later after the Dress Me Up window event.

My outfit (with the exception of the belt, hosiery and heels) was courtesy of My-Wardrobe.com

If you missed it, the video should give you a little glimpse into the energy, glamor and ambiance on the night.

Marian Kihogo X Dolce Gabbana Dress Me Up London

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Dolce & Gabbana Dress Me Up London.

Thursday 31st March, 2011.

Dolce & Gabbana, 6-8 Old Bond Street, London.

The Dolce & Gabbana Dress Me Up Tour arrived in London yesterday. The Italian luxury house launched their Dress Me Up incentive in Milan over fashion week as hosted by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana.

The Dolce & Gabbana Me Dress Up incentive sees bloggers take over the windows at the Dolce & Gabbana boutique.

I was honored to be invited by the luxury fashion house to be a part of the London leg of the tour. I attended the event in an outfit (with the exception of the belt, hosiery and heels) courtesy of My-Wardrobe.com

At our disposal for use, was the full spring summer 2011 collection. For my window, I drew inspiration from the all white aesthetic of the Dolce & Gabbana spring summer 2011 collection.

A glamorous star studded after party with no holds barred followed the dressing of the windows, in celebration of the event.

Many kind thanks to the whole Dolce & Gabbana team for this honor.
