the shopping basket // the fashion cape

Capes are great because they conjure up a variety of images and references for different people. For some, capes are very prim and proper English governess. For others they bring to mind flying superheroes and high flung action. Whenever I see a cape, I’m taken down memory lane to a hooded red wool cape that was one part Red Riding Hood and one part historic military.

Whatever references they bring to your mind, they are a mainstay for autumn winter 2010. I like that they can be trans-seasonal. Dependent on fabric, they can work through from late summer through Winter.

You might have to clear the bank balance to score the Paul & Joe shearling cape but it’d be worth every penny as it is gorgeous. I like the sleek uncomplicated lines of Stella’s camel cape. Topshop take on the military trend with their navy cape with brass buttons. Derek Lam’s double collar cape screams luxury.

The Magenta 8 label as founded by Giovanna Velasquez in 2006, is a relatively new discovery for me. I love how chic this belted cape is. The fact that it is handmade, makes it all that more special. Capes need not be bulky and this is proven by the H! by Henry Holland at Debenhams light knit cape, the black tailored Belle Sauvage cape and the Miss Selfridge khaki cape.

Will you be donning a cape? What are your thoughts on them?.
