I am honored to share a day in the life of the innately stylish and very busy senior editor with you.

Start my day at home and have to prepare for a video diary shoot for the InStyle website for London Fashion Week about what I wear during the shows so have taken clothes home to try on outfits. The videos will be filmed at my flat so will keep my chosen outfits there once I have selected them.

1pm
The photographer comes in to discuss our ideas for the shoot and run through the rail of clothes with him.

2pm
Carry on putting my outfits together.

Send out final emails for last minute samples for my shoot and then head to karla otto for late end of day press apptointment to pick some things out for me to wear during one of the other fashion weeks.

6.15pm
Stick on some red lipstick and head to soho house for a meeting with a new photographer am wanting to shoot with for InStyle.

8pm
Head home for a relaxing night as another busy day tomorrow!

Being a bit of workaholic myself, I like back to back Natalie’s day is. The creative work never stops, she is either in the middle of executing it preparing for it.

The first things that caught my attention when I first her was her warm personality, layered rings, style and incredible hair.

You have got to admire how her hair is effortlessly exuding punk meets rock star in the photos.

I think her leopard print bag has just kicked my new animal print obsession up a notch.

Many kind thanks to Natalie for taking the time to document a day in her life.

24 Hours In The Life // Zara Martin

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Zara Martin is a talent to watch. The beautiful presenter and model (face of luxury shoe label Mechante of London, face of fashion label BodyAmr and brand ambassador of French shoe website, Sarenza) recently turned designer when she collaborated with glamorous fashion house BodyAmr on a 7 piece capsule collection. It was shown alongside their mainline at their London fashion week spring summer 2011 show. Below is a photo of Zara in one of the designs from the capsule collection.

Photo Credit: Zara Martin in dress by BodyAmr & Zara Martin. Image by Fashion designer Amr of BodyAmr

It is no wonder that she has been featured in an array of press including the likes of Vogue India, Marie Claire UK, Tatler, Grazia, Glossy magazine, WWD, The Independent, Company magazine, ELLE, Vanity Fair, Cellardoor magazine, LOOK magazine, OK magazine etc.

A few months ago she kindly documented a business trip to LA for Mariankihogo.com as seen here.

It made for some fun reading, I had to get her to document another day in her busy life.

Read on for 24 hours in the life of Zara Martin.

7:30am
Rise and shine. And by shine, I mean the obligatory half an hour snooze. I can already tell it’s going to be a long day.

8:30am
I always start the day with a STRONG coffee. This morning I pick one up from Starbucks on my way to the gym.

10:00am
After a quick jog on the treadmill, I’m showered, changed and being ‘blown-dry’ by my hairdresser whilst checking out the new super-exciting addition to my website. My capsule collection in collaboration with BodyAmr is now available to order through www.zaramartin.com! YAY! Check it out!

11:00am
Phone interview with Coutts Woman magazine as Coutts & Co are sponsoring London Fashion Weekend this coming February, which I have just been confirmed to host for the second season running.

12:00pm
I am an ambassador for French shoe website, Sarenza and I’ve got to make it to Paris today for an event they are hosting this evening. However, with the current weather situation this is proving mighty problematic. All Eurostar trains to Paris have been cancelled or delayed so I am in a car, on way to City airport.

13:00pm
Arrive at airport. Super stressed that I may not even make it – major delays. Consider knocking back a few of the Black Label’s that are being passed out. Note to self: Must travel from this airport more often, so many hotties!

18:00pm
Finally arrive in Paris, quick stop at the hotel to freshen up. Throw on my J Brand black skinny jeans that I live in, Equipment shirt, Barbara Bui boots and DLUX Collections shearling coat to combat the cold!

19:30pm

Photo Credit: Image by Zara Martin.

At this point I have no idea where I am – the venue is crazy! Huge and covered in graffiti – perfect for a massive party, which I’m feeling this night is going to turn into…

20:00pm

Photo Credit: Zara Martin. Image by Alexis Capron.

Press call – some photos and interviews. (Yes, I am holding a picture of the Queen. Don’t ask.)

21:00pm
The Sarenza high heel race begins! (Sarenza is basically the ASOS of France and specializes in footwear. The high heel race is a competition they put on each year where teams compete for a ridiculous amount of free shoes!)

23:00pm
After some fun time ‘working’ I am now en route to a very late dinner at Hotel Costes, one of my favourite places in Paris.

1:00am

Photo Credit: Image by Zara Martin.

Finally in my Parisian bed! Can’t wait to catch some zzzz’s before my flight back to London in the morning. Fingers crossed it’s not cancelled.

I think I hate snow.

I think it is refreshing that despite the obvious Zara is incredibly busy with all the projects that she is involved, that she still has a sense of excitement about everything she does.

Just looking at the image of of the venue makes me dizzy from the sheer scale of it. I love the idea of the Sarenza high heel race, how much fun would that be?

My favourite image has to be the press call shot of Zara holding the image of the Queen, all in a days work!

24 Hours In The Life // Deborah Lyons of Mechante of London

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Footwear designer, Deborah Lyons (featured in above image) of Méchante of London is known for shoes that juxtapose fashion forward futurism and sophisticated femininity.

Lyons studied art in London, Florence, and Paris followed by fashion design at Parsons University, New York. Méchante of London shoes are bold in colour, luxurious with fine Italian craftsmanship and a timeless aesthetic. The collage above features designs from her autumn winter 2010 collection.

Apart from her main line, she has also designed collection shoes for the likes of fashion designer, William Tempest.

It was an honour when she agreed to document a day in her life for the 24 Hours In The Life series. segment.

Read on for a day in her life.

6.45 am
My alarm goes off at Villa Goetzen in Dola. A charming little house hotel on the river in the heart of the Veneto shoe region. Its still dark outside and requires every inch of will power I have to get up.

7.15 am
Having stopped drinking coffee about a year ago (it seemed like the easiest of my many vices to lose) I make an exception this morning. Partly because the wake up is far too early and the red wine last night too excessive, but mostly because a real Italian cappuccino at breakfast is totally irresistible. Mulling over some oven fresh bread with jam, I’m shifting through the sketches for FW11 making some last minute additions and changes.

8am
At 8am the car comes to pick us up and take us to the factory where the owner Eddy is waiting for us. Eddy is a pattern maker by training and has produced for a number of luxury brands including Alaia and Sergio Rossi. She has a wealth of experience in all things shoe related.

After going through all the designs for Mechante main line and Mechante for William Tempest together, we start to break them down by style. Shoes are all built on a form called a laste and every shoe requires its own laste and heel. Getting the laste right is probably the most important stage in development process and also the most time consuming part. It is therefore our first priority of the day.

10 am

By 10 am we’re in the laste factory. Built on 2 floors, downstairs is the factory floor where all the lastes are made, upstairs is an archive of every laste the factory has made in the past decade. Forming an incredibly visual time line in shoe history, a walk a long the floor details how footwear fashion has changed over the years.

Midday. After a couple of hours we’re ready to move on to the heel makers, another mecca for shoe designers. Browsing around here we spot some easily recognizable Givenchy wedges, Balenciaga heels, and Vuitton platforms. With a pretty firm idea of what we’re looking for however we’re in and out quite quickly and on to my favourite part of the Italian day… Lunch!

1pm
From 1-3pm every day of the year Italy has its ‘siesta’ time. All the shops are closed, all the factories vacated. The restaurants however are buzzing during these 2 hours, packed with locals, most of whom are in the industry. Eddy stops at various tables as we navigate our way through introducing me to exotic skin suppliers, sole makers, zip makers, other factory owners, and even a few family members.

After an enormous and very leisurely lunch of pasta, salads, grilled vegetables, and far too much bread and olive oil, we sit outside in the afternoon sunshine while Eddy nurses a single espresso and tells tales of her travels around the world. Eddy is a true explorer and at every chance she gets she’s off somewhere exotic. She has hundreds of stories from thousands of places.

3pm

Finally its time to get back to work and its straight over to the leather suppliers to see if we missed anything from last weeks leather fair at Linea Pelle in Milan.

From the incredibly alluring smell of leathers to the colours, textures, and sheer number of varieties, this is truly a sensory experience on every level. We see everything from Kangaroo to Crocodile and eventually pick up a few swatches of amazing lazer cut leathers, an array of different coloured eel skins, a few shades of python in this incredible rubber coated finish, and a couple options of some stunning treated leathers.

4.30 pm
By now its time to go back to the factory for a quick days debrief. We have an hour to revisit the designs and make any necessary changes or notes in line with what we’ve seen before I have to leave for the airport so its all a bit of a rush. Fortunately Eddy’s now used to what she calls “the New Yorker” in me, blackberry addict and all, and takes it in her stride. We set a date for my return when the heels and lastes will have arrived and we’ll be ready to start working on the patterns. By 6pm I’m in back in the car heading to Venice airport feeling the usual mix of anticipation and relief… another season under way.

6.45 pm
Venice airport is the only airport I’m actually happy to spend time at. Home to the best mozzarella and tomato panini I’ve ever had (yes more eating) and a mini la perla boutique its a surprisingly chic little haven.

Smelling like a new shoe and covered in scraps of leather, I set myself up at the gate. Panini in one hand, large glass of red wine in the other, and”The Inbetweeners” on my laptop.

9.30 pm
Back in the UK and in serious airport mode, I rush through passport control as fast as my Mechante’s will take me. Practically falling through the doors of the Gatwick express I’m feeling accomplished and very ready for my bed.

Where would a girl be without her favourite pairs of high heels? I like that Deborah’s day takes us behind the scenes into how her shoes come about. It is such a feat how much she gets done over the course of her documented day! I particularly like the images of the shoe lastes.

Kind thanks to Deborah for sharing a day in her life.

24 Hours In The Life // Zanele Kumalo

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Zanele Kumalo is the amazing Beauty Editor of Marie Claire South Africa. Her work is an inspiration. I was honoured when she agreed to document a day in her busy life for the 24 Hours In The Life series.

Do read on for her day.

8:03

Photo Credit: Courtesy of Zanele Kumalo.

I wake up with a start when I hear someone leaving the complex. My Blackberry has died – screen is frozen and I can’t switch it on or off. I was supposed to wake up an hour ago! The day begins on a rushed note. It takes me an hour to get ready as I have to wash, blow and flatiron my hair because I’m meeting new clients today. Normally I would have just twisted my hair into an updo. I don’t usually have breakfast so skip it as normal. I only get hungry around 10am.

9:30
I race to the PR agency who organized both myself and the fashion director two new Blackberries. My cellphone provider has given me a long story about how it will take 10 working days to fix, and that they can’t give me a loan phone while they do so. I cannot function sans mobile when I spend a large part of my day out of the office. They come to my rescue and I set up my phone at every red light. I’m finally connected again and hoping no one has tried to get hold of me in the last hour.

10:14
I arrive at the Westcliff on time. They’ve asked us to arrive 15 minutes before the start of our scheduled interview with the doyenne herself, Essie Weingarten who creates all those fabulous bottles of nail colour. Only a few publications have been granted interviews so I’m lucky and I get to experience the new resort collection and anti-ageing hand treatment range a few hours before the other beauty eds. The colours are going to be perfect for my upcoming trip to Croatia. I catch up with the PR lady, a really sweet women, but all I can think is I wish I’d had time to paint my nails. I would have chosen my current favourite from the brand – Neo-Whimsical – a pinkish lilac.

10:28

Photo Credit: Courtesy of Zanele Kumalo.

I finally meet Essie, after months of anticipation and have a moment of panic when I can’t find a pen. She’s beautiful, engaging and very savvy and we chat about fashion, colours and groomed hands. I’m glad my nails are bare though as chipped nail polish would have been unforgivable.

11:00
My half hour interview is up and I have 30 minutes before my next meeting. I’ve decided to conduct all my morning meetings at the beautiful hotel. It’s one of my favourite places in the city because the views overlooking the Zoo and Jozi’s leafy suburbs are spectacular. Even in winter. You can see trees up until the horizon. I’m tempted to lock myself into a bathroom and play with the new colours but I know I’ll make a mess of it.

11:27
A skincare range, developed by an infamous surgeon is being launched in SA and they’re talking to Marie Claire about it first. We all love a scoop. Sipping on sparkling water, out in the sun at a table by the pool, makes for an incredible setting. Marie Claire is an easy sell so I keep it simple and we’re both excited about upcoming opportunities. The guy to my left is very cute, and straight. I’m surprised because the industry is largely female with a few gay men. I’m single so that’s the only relevance.

12:45
A large group of beauty eds and salon owners settle down to lunch. One colleague who I consider a friend, has just come back from a 20 day trip to Italy and France and I’m dying to hear how it was, particularly Milan where I visited a few months ago. We chat for a bit over a Chardonnay but have to postpone the conversation to a weekend catch-up. Essie is going to be unveiling what I’ve already been privy to but I don’t mind. She’s eloquent and I hear a little more about what makes her tick. She crawls into our hearts when she says that South Africa has been one of the best places she has ever visited and I’m super happy that she’s enjoying the World Cup. The buzz here has been historic. We have a lovely starter of butternut soup followed by Kingklip and risotto. Nice and light.

14:38
I have to rush off to do a radio interview and we both sneak out while Essie is talking. It’s rude but I can’t be late for my next appointment. And we both have all the info already.

15:01
I arrive at the broadcaster and am told at reception that the ladies I was supposed to be meeting, have left for the day. Usually I would have been quite angry but after a glass of wine and a lovely day at the Westcliff, I’m in no mood to pick a fight.

15:42

Photo Credit: Courtesy of Zanele Kumalo.

I arrive back at the office and show the ed, fashion director and assistant ed the colours. They all pick a different colour, which expresses their personalities perfectly but I let them know, they’ll have to wait til I get back from Cape Town after shooting them for the next issue. I have to add a few more colours to my mood board to reflect these new pastels. I explore one of my cupboards to see what else I can include as part of an upcoming story.

17:27
I get home with just enough time to finally give myself a mani before meeting a friend for drinks at the nearby Hyde Park Hotel. It’s my favourite bar in Jozi – our slice of Manhattan. Quiet, chic and unpretentious and I never seem to wakeup with a hangover after.

20:21
The day ends as I look at my diary to see what’s planned for tomorrow. I fly to Cape Town and have a function in the evening. On a boat, with a nautical dress code. Exciting. Can’t wait to sample the new fragrance they’ll be launching. Will definitely be glamorous.

22:30
After packing my bags, reading a chapter of a neglected novel (due to the World Cup) and watching a bit of television, I put my lights out. Early to bed, early to rise.

I am honoured that Zanele agreed to document a day in her life. It was such a joy to read. I absolutely loved her day. Being a nail varnish enthusiast myself, I think it is amazing that she met and interviewed Essie Weingarten.

Zanele’s day was as busy as expected for a beauty editor. I adore that despite its pace, she still managed to have drinks with a friend at the end of it all.

It is clearly evident that she is passionate about her job, Marie Claire SA and works incredibly hard.

I am sure her trip, the following day to Capetown, for the event on the boat went well. Functions with dress codes are always fun!

Visit the Marie Claire SA site here.

Many kind thanks and regards to Zanele.

24 Hours In The Life // Esme Benjamin

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Photo Credit: Photography and Copyright – Rankin

Esme Benjamin is an online editor and style blogger. I loved her posts as her former alias, ‘Junior Fashion Editor at Large’, on Melanie Rickey’s much read Fashion Editor at Large blog.

She now authors the blog, Salute to Style.

Her zest for life inspired me to feature her next in the 24 in the life series.

Read on for a day in Esme’s life.

7.00
My alarm goes off in my ear at 7am on the dot. I press the sleep button even though I really ought to drag my butt to the gym. My life goes a mile a minute at the moment. Something has to give, and to the detriment of my thighs that thing more often than not is exercise.

8.30

I start my three part commute. My boyfriend takes a picture of me outside our house stood in ‘The Sculpture Garden’ (it’s seriously the most obscure and unlikely thing to put in an East London public green). Isn’t she a beaut!

I’m wearing my favourite dress in the whole world. Whenever I wear it people stop me in the street to ask where it’s from (it’s vintage should you also care to know).

8.45
I get on the tube at Bethnal Green Station. This is always the worst part of my morning journey as it’s consistently the busiest. It’s crowded and hot as per usual, and the woman in front of me looks as if she may faint. Or puke…on me probably.

9.00
Change at Bank for the Waterloo & City line, then again at Waterloo where I hop on the train to south west London. The woman opposite me asks me if my hair is real…What does that mean!? Make a mental note to book myself an emergency hair appointment and shove it back in a bun as soon as she gets off at Clapham Junction.

9.20
Arrive at work and start preparing the latest LuxeMail.
Today’s is about Boutique 1, which is kind of like the Net-A-Porter.com of the Middle East. The SheerLuxe girls quickly declare it an untapped gem, as this site has Carrie’s purple pleated Halston Herritage dress from SATC2 in stock *and* on sale!

10.12
Invites of the day:

Would I like to meet the owners of Vintroville – a new east London vintage shop full of cherry picked marvels and retro re-works. Sounds like something I could be very in the market for…

Would I be interested in a complimentary summer pamper package at The Chapel? Yes please! Shame they can’t fit me in this week to sort my hair out. I call the salon and make an appointment for this evening.

12.00

My friend Bex texts me to say she’s found some flights to Ibiza. Last week of August, £170 with BA. We’ve been trying to organise our holiday for the last couple of days and this seems like a great deal so I give the go ahead…

Go onto the roof terrace to eat lunch and flick through Grazia in the sunshine.

Do a spot of online shopping on my lunch break (yes, here at SheerLuxe we practice what we preach) and order a Mawi necklace reduced from £55 to £9 and a bangle which is down from £75 to just £15. Super chuffed with my bargains du jour.

14.00

Head central with Rosie, our intern, to take some shots for our street style blog. Meet a gorgeous American girl who works as a yoga instructor (what I secretly want to do when I grow up).

15.52
Head back to the office; edit and post two features on the site and write a quick blog entry before heading off for the day.

I get off at Liverpool Street and meet my boyfriend quickly at the St Martins’ graduate exhibition on Bishopsgate. I’m pretty obsessed with photography, and this image from a series of three by Brendan Olley catches my eye. It was taken in Svalbard – the world’s most northern town. I’m as puzzled as the photographer is as to why anybody would want to live there, but hey – it makes for a scenic picture.

7.15

Rush to my hair appointment at Pimps & Pins-ups. I went to their New York salon when I was working for NYLON Magazine last year so I trust them to do a good job. Come out feeling that my hair no longer looks like a bad weave. Phew.

8.00
Head to Broadway Market to meet friends for a few drinks. When I arrive they’ve already bought a bottle of Champagne. Just a standard mid-week ritual for these girls, that’s why I love ‘em.

Walk home feeling a tad tipsy. It’s turned into a nice evening and the reflection of a pinky sky on the dark glassy canal is a nice image to go to bed with. Sweet dreams all.

Esme is a talented beautiful writer. How stunning is that first photo of her as taken by renowned photographer Rankin?

The print of the vintage dress is so pretty, it is no wonder she gets lots of compliments when she wears it.

I loved the rundown of her day, from lunch on the rooftop terrace, to taking street style photos for SheerLuxe’s site, getting her hair done at Pimps & Pins-ups right through to that pretty picture of the canal by night.

How scenic is the Svalbard photography by Brendan Olley? Absolutely stunning. It is so intriguing that someone actually lives there.

It is a non stop day filled with lots of hard work. I like that you can tell that she loves what she does.

The dog in the picture with the Ibiza text is beyond adorable!

Talking about that Ibiza text, here is to wishing Esme a fabulous time in Ibiza.

What parts of her day did you like?

Kind thanks and glam kisses to Esme.

24 Hours In The Life // Chloe Batt

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Photo Credit: Chloe Batt. Courtesy of Chloe Batt.

Chloe Batt as pictured in the image above, was educated at Oxford and in Paris and now heads up the editorial team at Matches.

Her features and interviews on the popular Matches Fashion blog make it an addictive regular must read.

Her busy days are filled with everything from interviewing designers that Matches stock to manning all things editorial and writing the Matches blog etc.

I was therefore incredibly honoured when she agreed to document a day in her life for my 24 in the life series.

Read on for a day in her life.

7.30 am
It doesn’t take me long to get ready in the morning as I have a separate working wardrobe, making it much easier to decide what to wear! My on-duty look consists almost entirely of Freda; I love that pulled-together yet laidback luxe look: silk T shirts, little cropped jackets, slouchy-chic pants. I’m quite understated for a fashion writer, although I like a really statement jacket or pair of heels. Today I wear: white silk tee with black tux-style pants both by Freda (surprise, surprise!); a 3.1 Phillip Lim blazer and YSL Gaia peep-toe sandals: I adore these!

Photo Credit: Courtesy of Chloe Batt.

I always keep my jewellery really simple: discreet diamond stud earrings, and maybe a delicate pendant.

8.45 am
Armed with a Starbucks (I seem to be forever putting money on my Starbucks card which, frighteningly for someone so addicted to almond lattes, is a new acquisition), I make my way to the offices of Matchesfashion.com in southwest London. There is no typical day for me here: my work ranges from dashing about town interviewing designers, compiling editorial for the website and writing the Matches blog.

11 am
I am so excited about AW10. Just look at some of the beautiful new pieces already winging their way to Matches for a photo shoot for our forthcoming magazine! My favourite show this season was definitely Erdem; I loved his new grown-up mood of brooding sophistication. This sweeping silk dress is a must-have this autumn, as are the Burberry Prorsum boots (which have a shearling lining, so cosy!)

1pm
Just found out that Diane von Furstenberg is in town for the launch of the rooms she has designed at Claridges, and I have to meet her later with the rest of the Matches and DVF London teams. I have to find a wrap dress quick!

3pm
Mission accomplished, I have a dress. Just time to dash home to change and check up on my darling little puglet, Pericles.

Photo Credit: Chloe Batt. Courtesy of Chloe Batt.

6pm
Head to our DVF store in Mayfair where Diane is meeting the team. Everyone is in DVF and looks amazing. Diane makes my day by telling me I look cute in my dress. She talks about her foray into interior design at Claridges, and updates us on all the DVF news from NYC. “You need confidence and clarity to succeed” she tells us. What an inspiration!

9pm
Round the corner, I meet my boyfriend for supper, and afterwards we head to the Lanesborough for drinks. The cigar terrace there is so beautiful, and the amaretto sours (my favourite drink) divine…very moorish!

12pm
Bedtime – I am so tired! Can’t wait to see all the pictures from the DVF event tomorrow!

How adorable is Pericles the Puglet?

I like how Chloe’s day seemed like the perfect mix of hard work and rewarding play. You can tell she loves her job.

It is brilliant that she has a separate work wardrobe, trust me when I say that it will make life a lot easier for all you hard working girls.

It is a tip I always share with my stylish working clients with busy lives and little time.

On a final note, Diane Von Furstenberg is such an inspiration! I can only imagine what the Matches meet with her was like. Diane’s “You need confidence and clarity to succeed” quote to the team as shared by Chloe is my quote of the week!

Kind thanks and glam kisses to beautiful Chloe for documenting her day.

Emily kindly documented a fabulous day in her life for Mariankihogo.com

I am super excited to share this new feature in the 24 Hours in the life series.

Read on for 24 Hours in her life.

There is a very odd hotel that I’ve been driving past for years called The Madonna Inn, which is about an hour and a half north of Santa Barbara. It was built in the 50′s and each room is a different theme (Jungle Room, Pink Glitter Room, Caveman Room!!!). I finally got a reservation for a cave room with a waterfall shower, and my boyfriend and I set off on our adventure.

We got up in our house in LA early Saturday, in the morning, grabbed our suitcases and got in the car. We stopped by my Mom and Dad’s house in Santa Barbara to see their new puppy, Darwin.

He’s basically bit my face off, but he is very very cute. My Mom made us oatmeal cookies and we got back on the road.

We drove through Solvang, a Danish town in the mountains where I have been going since I was little. We decided to become friends with a group of people who were in a motorcycle gang, and they made us cocktails and we talked about initiation ceremonies to become part of the gang (they sign their names in blood!) My skirt blew up and they all saw my underwear.

Then we went to get Aebelskiver (a really good Danish dessert with powdered sugar). Sometimes I want to move to Solvang and buy a horse.

We drove through the mountains and listened to the new Broken Bells album (so good) and Tom Petty.

We stopped in Pismo Beach and watched the surfers. The ocean looked warm but I’m sure it was freezing.

Robb took some pictures of me but I looked like a blue whale. A massive wolf looking dog chased a tiny weiner dog about 5 blocks and we helped the owner track him down.

Finally we arrived at the Madonna Inn! Our room was TINY compared to the picture on the website, but still was hilarious and we had an entire bathroom made of rocks.

Took a shower under a waterfall and we got ready for dinner. I hung all my clothes up, to pretend that it was my closet and I lived there. I do this at every hotel, do you? I get so excited and it feels like a new home. We got to dinner, I wore these massive YSL heels and almost fell a million times. My boyfriend made fun of me for trying to look so fancy.

The dining room was ALL PINK and gold. Even the tablecloth matched the leather seats. There were pictures of old cowboys and celebrities that had eaten there. I ordered a baked potato and a piece of strawberry cake. We met an old man who said he had stayed in almost every room and that some of them are definitely haunted.

After dinner we drove around San Louis Opisbo to see what was going on. There was a renaissance festival in town and we decided to crash it. I wore a blanket and pretended it was a cape. We only stayed inside for about 3 minutes.

Then we went out to a divey little bar and saw some of our friends who were in town. Suzanne, one of my best friends, has a vintage store called Spanish Moss Vintage, where I get half of my wardrobe. We played Pac Man and had beers and talked about Nashville and the next Wildfox shoot. Suzanne is going to lend me things to help style it. After a while, we got very tired and decided to go back to the hotel. We curled up in the cave bed and went to sleep, it had been a very long day!!!

The beach shots are just stunning and scenic.

The pink 1950′s dining room is Barbie fantastic! How fun is the rock bathroom? I would never leave that hotel. I would want to stay in each room and explore!

The images of her eating Aebelskiver on the beach and at the end of night are gorgeous.

I enjoyed reading her fun adventure filled day; right from making friends with the motorcycle gang to the shower beneath the cave bathroom waterfall.

Her work has included everything from cartoons, popcorn headpieces, sequins and sheen in infinite amounts, gingerbread men, superhero-esque proportions and a fantasy colour palette.

Emma’s designs has received press from the likes of Dazed and Confused, Elle Girl, WWD New York, Vice, The Daily Mail, WAD Paris, Time Out, Drapers, Super Super, Wonderland, Look Magazine, Notion, The Daily Express, Cosmopolitan, The Daily Mirror and lots more.

She has collaborated with a host of personalities and brands. One memorable one is her collaboration with Vauxhall motors, I loved the ‘Emma Bell for Vauxhall’ event which saw some of the cars get an Emma Bell makeover. Think Vauxhall cars embellished in giant mirror ball pieces, sweets etc. My favourite was the disco mirror one, seen below.

Wonder what a day in Emma’s life is like? Read on to find out.

7.15am
Wakey Wakey! Time to get up and first port of call is checking my emails! I’m working with a client in the US at the moment so the emails seem to filter through during the night!

Emma’s laptop. Image courtesy of Emma Bell.

9.30am
Emails tended to, and it’s off into town via a Chai Latte stop off. It’s raining and I wish I hadn’t bothered battling with the straighteners! I’m wearing my new, amazing necklace that Locketship sent me all the way from LA! Woo!

11am
I’m meeting with one of my interns to go through a few bits and pieces for the new collection as well as picking up some extra special coloured wool for one of my latest pieces.

12pm
Meeting up with Alexis Knox at the Notion magazine office to go through all of my previous season’s samples and picking out some special outfits. A band that I LOVE called ‘Fan Death’ are flying in from the US today and will be wearing my stuff for their UK tour. So we package up a load of clothing and accessories for them and send it trotting off to their hotel, so it’s ready and waiting when they arrive!

2.30pm
Yummy lunch at Juno on Shoreditch High Street, my favourite, Halloumi stack! Gourmet!

3.30pm
It’s back on the emails pretty much for the duration of the afternoon! We are putting together media-packs for an upcoming project in Vienna that I am directing and this involves liasing with a million different people. In other news, got some proofs through from a couple of recent shoots which is exciting including my recent New York shoot with Raquel Reed as well as a nice bit of coverage from the Independent!

7pm
I’m finally sitting down to some serious hand-knitting…prepare for the blisters! One of the pieces I’m currently working on involves about a trillion individually knitted segments to create the overall textile before it can be cut and constructed into the garment, so that’s an ongoing scenario. I’m also going to whack out a completed pattern for the said item this evening!

9pm
Skype o’clock! A couple of hours of cyber-meeting with Polona, my co-curator for the Vienna exhibition to run through visuals, lay plans and how to make a fake beach! exciting stuff! Whipped up some fried rice….which I will eat with my extra special turquoise chop sticks and matching bowl!

12pm
I’m back on my knitting and scribbling some stuff in my journal with ‘Shameless’ on 40d in the background debating whether or not to go to sleep. Have to leave the house at 4am to fly to Denmark. Gallery International are bringing a few of us over to cover Copenhagen Fashion Week which I’m super excited about! I’ve never been and have heard the Little Mermaid lives there!

4am
En route to airport, decided against sleeping. Apparently its –12 degrees there.

24 Hours ln The Life // Jessica McCormack

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Jessica McCormack in her Salon. Image courtesy of Jessica McCormack.

Jessica McCormack is a London based, bespoke fine diamond jewellery designer from New Zealand.

Jessica McCormack’s bespoke one off designs are sculptural, iconic, epic and tell a story. She draws inspiration from Greek mythology, Architecture, nature and life. Her one of designs are personable and truly unique, it is no wonder that the cream of editorial(everyone from Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Another Man, Elle, Vanity Fair, Push IT, Retail Jeweller, The Telegraph, The Times to others) and celebrity (Rihanna and etc) crop adore her work.

The first piece that she ever designed was the Wing of Desire, as inspired by Hermes’s winged sandals and hat. The epic piece is part of her Messenger Of The Gods collection. See the piece as below, how amazing is it?

Her bold, graphic Jewels Of The Urban Night collection was inspired by the iconic buildings around the world. From the New York Night diamond ring, as inspired by the Manhattan night skyline…

To her BT Tower diamond earrings which was inspired by the London Post Office Tower as pictured below.

I like the lines and mechanical feel of her Cog piece, part of her Wind Up Archive.

Jessica says –

“For me, making jewellery is about creating miniature sculptures. Each piece is the end result of my desire to turn what I perceive to be beautiful into a tiny piece of art. I would like people to re-evaluate their perception of fine jewellery and precious stones, breaking down barriers on how diamonds are considered, worn and used, with emphasis on luxury being about personal experience, appreciation and knowledge.”

Ever wondered what a day in the life of bespoke fine diamond jeweller was like? Jessica recently documented a day in her life for Mariankihogo.com, so you need not wonder no more. Do read on for a fabulous 24 hours in her life.

6am
My boyfriend’s alarm goes off- he lives by the Roman’s mantra that it is a luxury to be gently awakened and then drift in an out of sleep. I couldn’t disagree more and when Radio 4 starts blaring I have no chance of getting any more sleep.

8am
I throw on some jeans, a T-Shirt and my massive Burberry platform boots, which give me a well-needed 6 inches of extra height and keep me out of the puddles. I grab my bag, which is always overloaded with random stuff to the point of inducing serious back pain and bail out the door. The trip from west to east London on the tube is never an easy or enjoyable one but well worth it once I reach the charming cobbled streets of Clerkenwell.

9am
On my way from the station to the Salon I pick up a coffee for the walk. I love that the guy at the coffee shop knows me well enough now to have my skinny cappuccino ready by the time I reach the front of the queue. Arriving at the Salon, I imagine that opening up is not dissimilar to what it’s like getting in to Fort Knox.

Once I am inside, I feel like I have left the craziness of London, I wish I could stay upstairs (which is where we see all our clients)…the girls I work with tease me that I have a collector’s possession obsession, and the Salon is the manifestation of this habit! It is full of art, curiosities, antiques, ultra modern installations, furniture, jewels and books that I have created or collected over the years.

Downstairs in the basement is where we actually work though, not so glamorous but a great working environment and I can be a lot more productive down here without all the distractions of upstairs!

10am
I have a catch up with my team and we discuss client appointments for next week and look at how the new collection, XIV, is progressing. We are so nearly finished and are trying to wait until each of the seven deadly sins and seven contrary virtues are completed and back from our workshops in London before we get too excited. We talk about our next event, which is coming up – a diamonds and dominoes evening called “Night on the Tiles”. We are at a really interesting growth point in the business so we are always discussing new projects, ideas, initiatives and exciting opportunities seem to keep cropping up. So far so good but still not a diamond in sight!

12pm
Just as I am settling in to updating my Jessica McCormack’s blog,

I get a call from my stone dealer so I pop up to the garden (our slang for Hatton Garden…a crazy road full of diamond merchants and jewellery workshops) and have a look at some interesting shaped diamonds that he has got in; when he saw them he instantly thought of me…he knows my love for the unusual. There is a 2.70ct fancy shield shape diamond that screams old world glamour and the avant-garde and instantly inspires me. A pair of epaulet-shaped diamonds are very cool and will be perfect for a client’s engagement ring that I am designing at the moment. An amazing 3.45 carats cushion fancy brownish yellow that is the rich colour of malt whisky is the last stone to catch my eye and I take the lot.

1.30pm
I leg it down the road to join the other J’s (* editor’s note -The J’s are another lovely Jessica and sweet Josephine who are part of Jessica McCormack’s integral team) in Clerkenwell Kitchens which is just over the road from the Salon and we stuff our faces while catching up on weekend plans and what has been happening while I’ve been out of the office. It’s only been an hour but already we’ve had a call from Pollyanna to say that they have a client who have seen our diamond pocket watch keys in their store and are looking for a bespoke set.

3pm
have a meeting with the incredible photographer James Mountford to discuss the photo shoot that we are going to do for XIV. I have a really clear idea of what I want and love his aesthetic and know that he is on the same page as me. We discuss models, styling and the artistic direction for the shoot. By the end of the meeting I am so over-excited and start planning in my head the launch party and a worldwide travelling exhibition for the collection so that my clients all over the world can have a chance to see it.

5pm
Somehow the day has flown by and I still have heaps of drawings to do for clients.

5.30pm
The Salon doorbell rings for the last appointment of the day with a client who is commissioning a one-off cocktail ring. I love the relationships that I have with my clients; they are the most important part of my business. We don’t only bend over backwards for our clients…we do backflips!

8pm
I head back to my hood and hit the Electric for a cheeseburger and vodka, lime and sodas. A Friday night here has been known to quickly turn from a quiet night to a very messy one when a round of Jagers is replaced with a whole bottle and only 6 glasses!

2am
I feel I’ve got away lightly when I escape my friends and jump in a cab home to bed, so happy that I don’t have to be woken by the radio in 4 hours time.

I enjoyed reading this so much. Right from the start of her day to her hailing the cab at 2am. I am a fan of Jessica’s bespoke designs (I call upon them when my clients need to hit the red carpet) for their lines, the stories behind them and the fact that each is a one off. I am looking forward to seeing what her XIV collection will be like.

Lusting over those Burberry platform boots! Her upcoming Diamonds & Dominoes “Night on the Tiles” event sounds wonderful.

How great does the Salon look? The place is like an Aladdin’s cave. When I stop by I always spot something new. The swing is such a decadent touch.
