The Shopping Basket // Art Deco

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

The 1920′s roared back into our midst through spring 2012 collections. Culture and the arts have long inspired the catwalk and Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming adaptation of F.Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby and TV’s Boardwalk Empire have influenced the current Art Deco resurgence.

A great way to channel this trend? Through modern Art Deco inspired accessories.

Object Of My Affection // Marie Munier Marine Shell Ring

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Not too long ago I had a look at the under the sea trend that designers explore for spring here.

There is unfinished quality about this handcrafted shell ring by Marie Munier that beckons. Encrusted with 1.2cts diamonds, I could see the gold marine inspired piece lying on a beach, glistening as the sun hits the gold and diamonds. The design will still hold court long after the sea fashion trend has died.

Thank goodness Munier turned her hand to jewelry design. She was initially in Interior Design, shifting to oil painting and then finally to jewelry.

You can buy Marie’s ring on her Then and Now site.

Object Of My Affection // Thakoon Spring Summer 2012 Shoes

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Thai born, New York based fashion designer Thakoon Panichgul is a genius.

Western Americana and the cowboy theme have been done to death. Bollywood and India have been referenced to death. Only a genius could throw these two contrasting elements together and birth the above footwear.

His ability to create something fresh, something cult (from references that could have easily fallen into cliche street) in its appeal is his genius.

The structure of the boot shoe is classic Western Americana but in a non literal way. It has that extra something which is birthed by a good designer. One who is able to take reference from his inspiration but add his take on it. The exotic skin in that color way is a wonderful way of referencing the joyful color and embellishment of India without being obvious. The shape of the toe with metal toe cap and instep of the shoe is everything.

The lovechild of India and Western Americana is quite a looker.

Prepare to fall in lust as you view his whole range of footwear for spring 2012 here.

Object Of My Affection // Shourouk

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Cha Cha Otero necklace by Shourouk

When it comes jewellery that is a hybrid result of metals and materials, there is no grey area. It either works or it doesn’t. The latter being cliche and costume in feel.

One line that shines is Shourouk. I have been watching the progress of the brand as designed and founded by a Parisian of Tunisian descent since 2007. Named after its founder, Shourouk Rhaiem, Shourouk has been seen in Sex and the City 2 and Gossip Girl.

It has been worn by the likes of Beth Ditto, Lady Gaga, Michelle Obama (commissioned a bespoke creation) and that cool girl about your way.

The genius of the Shorouk aesthetic is the mix of souk, grandeur, Rock and Roll, detailed embellishment and industrial direction.

Feast your eyes on the line.
