Marian Kihogo – Gold Fairy by Hormazd Narielwalla. 2011 Paper Collage by Hormazd Narielwalla. Courtesy & Coyright: Hormazd Narielwalla.

There are those who are just special and truly so. Artist Hormazd Narielwalla belongs to that small sect of people.

At the St Martins Lane and Marian Kihogo for Mariankihogo 2nd anniversary dinner, artist Hormazd Narielwalla presented me with this surprise art piece.

This paper collage sees the artist continue in his exploration of positive and negative space.

He explained that the collage, which employs off-cuts (from tailoring patterns discarded onto the cutters workroom floor) is a depiction of me as a gold fairy. I am forever intrigued by how his work takes patterns out of its usual context.

I cannot thank Hormazd Narielwalla enough for this wonderful 2nd anniversary gift. I am particularly intrigued by the skirt of the dress which is the coming together of pattern remnants. My eye is also continually drawn to my profile and my back. Each time I look at the collage (which has pride of place in my abode) I am taken to the memories of that anniversary night.

Please read more on the piece and inspiration on it here.

Inspiration // Cesária Évora

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Yamore by Salif Keita featuring Cesária Évora via here.

No one quite wore a bare foot, languid finger waves, bedecked jeweled rings and dark rich nail lacquer quite like you.

Placed in an orphanage at 10, she went on to international acclaim and laudable awards (multiple KORA awards and a Grammy award).

Évora is proof, if there ever was any, that your genesis and past do not determine your future.

Rest in peace bare foot diva, rest in peace Cesária Évora.

Cape Verde and the world at large has lost a bright star.

More on the late singer here.

Be inspired.

Marian Kihogo Fashion Goddess By Hormazd Narielwalla // Marian Kihogo by Hormazd Narielwalla Part 2

I believe that the truly great, bring the greatness out of us. They unconsciously challenge to strive to walk on paths not yet explored. As they seek to reach unbound potential, they unwittingly inspire us to do the same.

Artist Hormazd Nariewalla is one such person. I have not been able to sharing his vision and work here, here, and here.

Both not only explore abstract form using bespoke tailoring patterns, they also offer a sense of genius. His is the ability to think in a new way. As he shares with the world his vision I am continually inspired by the creative process behind it.

A recent visit to his studio, (brimming with inspiration) saw us go from an initial thirty minute conversation window to one that split over to an hour plus. Where true inspiration exists, natural enthusiasm abounds.

In a world of so much manufactured and regurgitated white noise, in Narielwalla’s work lies a new song.

The above piece by Narielwalla (copyright of the artist) is his second piece of me. The first being the surprise Happy Birthday-Marian Kihogo by Hormaxd Narielwalla. Both leave me truly honored and awe inspired.

In conversation Narielwalla kindly mention that the pink lip in his Marian Kihogo-Fashion Godess piece was inspired by my lip color worn in my video interview (February 2011) with Daisy Eau So Fresh by Marc Jacobs muse, Hannah Holman.

Video of that New York based interview here.

Inspiration // Willie Christie Grace Coddington

It is impossible to talk about fashion photography in the 1970′s and early 1980′s without Willie Christie cropping up.

The acclaimed British fashion photographer is known for his extensive work with British Vogue. His work become synonymous with iconic rock and roll album cover art, glamorous slick images of the most glamorous people, captivating dark sepia photography.

For me it is his ability to capture an intriguing-beguile-mysterious quality that is almost tangible in form that fascinates.

I am particularly fond of Christie’s shots of a young Grace Coddington (the former model was his wife at that time and is now US Vogue’s Creative Director). There is a magic about these images of Grace by Christie that holds court.

These images and others (rare images of Grace Coddington, unseen images from the worlds of fashion and music across the 70′s and 80′s and a celebrated 1969 Rolling Stones shoot portrait of Mick Jagger) are currently part of Christie’s Limited Edition Collection. It is on display at the Century Club, 61-63 Shaftesbury Avenue, London.

Happy Birthday Marian Kihogo By Hormazd Narielwalla // Marian Kihogo By Hormazd Narielwalla Part 1

Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Happy Birthday Marian Kihogo by Hormazd Narielwalla. 2011 Paper Collage by Hormazd Narielwalla. Copyright & Courtesy: Hormazd Narielwalla.

Being immortalized by an artist is perhaps the most humbling accolade I could be given. This art piece by Hormazd Narielwalla is a sincere honor as I am continually inspired by his work, approach and perspective.

Artist Hormazd Narielwalla’s work explores the pleathora of tailoring patterns. He uses their graphic form to create artwork that is an abstract and intelligent meeting place between illustration and art.

The London College of Fashion PhD candidate, who is currently in a residency with Dege & Skinner, created the above piece as an early 30th birthday gift (which happens to fall on the day of his eminent solo exhibition, 14th November).

Hormazd Narielwalla opened a solo exhibition called Fairy-God, Fashion-Mother on 8th November 2011. At The Modern Pantry in Clerkenwell, London, it is on show till 7th January 2012.

More on Narielwalla, his work and that exhibition here and here.

Many kind thanks to Hormazd Narielwalla. I look forward to supporting and attending the launch of the exhibition on Monday 14th November, 2011.

Go See // Susie MacMurray Agnew’s Solo Debut

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

Two Hairnets, No. 4, 2011 – pen on paper by Susie MacMurray

Susie MacMurray Solo debut show at Agnew’s Gallery.

9th November – 2nd December, 2011.

Agnew’s, 35 Albemarle Street, London W1S 4JD.

Manchester based artist Susie MacMurray is fast becoming recognized for her large scale, site specific (particularly in within historic buildings) which encompass architectural installations, drawing and sculpture.

She memorably built a wall of silver plated mussel shells lined with velvet at Pallant House, Chichester; and hung 10,000 hairnets containing used violin bow hair in York St Mary’s in association with the York Museums Trust.

The former professional classical musician retrained as an artist, graduating with an MA in Fine Art in 2001. She has gone on to build an international exhibition profile. The show at Agnew’s first solo exhibition.

With each piece of work nothing is as quite as pretty, unassuming and as it looks. A wedding gown is constructed out of hundreds of household gloves pointing to the domestic reality that the romantic fairytale becomes, human hair looped through fish hooks and so on etc. Her recurrent theme of beauty and the sinister undertone is compelling.

The solo show coincides with her inclusion in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s The Power of Making exhibition.
